Alexander Vassos: Writer & Composer
Alexander Vassos is a Los Angeles-based composer, writer, and baritone. Alex has written dozens of pieces for solo, chamber, and large ensembles. His instrumental music reflects a deep interest in the physicality of sound production. Rather than relying on received ideas of the way the instruments are played, Alex crafts his form, harmony and rhythms out of new instrumental techniques of his own devising. For Alex, composition is the act of forming a dialogue with the instrument or technique at hand; composition is the act of following a physical process rather than a musical idea.
Alex's operatic work sits at the crossroads between electronic music, opera and cinema. By employing both traditional instrumental and vocal means, as well as sound design and speaker systems that surround the audience, the drama of Alex's music jumps off the stage and into the mind. Surreal soundscapes are pitted against the traditional operatic mold to shift the audience experience between the role of the observer and that of the immersed.
